Deployment for IT teams

Deploy Rhino Sync to many computers, open the firewall and pre-configure user settings.

This page is for administrators who install Rhino Sync for a team.

Checklist

• Every computer runs Rhino 8.14 or later on .NET Core.

• Every computer runs the same Rhino Sync version.

• Every user has a unique Rhino Sync user name.

• The firewall allows the hosts below.

• Every user can read and write the folder that holds the central file.

Install silently on Windows

The installer is an Inno Setup package. It installs for all users and needs administrator rights.

Close Rhino on the target computer first. The installer replaces the files of any previous version.

To detect the installation, check that Rhino.Sync.rhp exists in the install folder.

To remove Rhino Sync silently, run:

Install with the Package Manager

On macOS, and on Windows if you prefer packages, install RhinoSync from the Rhino Package Manager. The Package Manager installs per user. See Rhino Package Manager for Windows and macOS.

Don't combine the installer and the package on the same computer.

Network access

Allow outbound HTTPS on port 443, including WebSocket upgrades, to these hosts:

To test access, open https://sync.mksdtech.com/collaborationHub in a browser on the user's computer. The page shows Connection ID required.

For a network drive, users also need SMB access to the share.

Storage

For a network drive:

• Give every user read, write and create permission on the folder that holds the central file. Rhino Sync creates a _collab folder next to it.

• Users can map the share to different drive letters.

• Measure speed in Settings while collaborating. See Settings.

For cloud storage, each user needs an account with edit access to the central file:

• Google Drive: a Google account.

• OneDrive: a personal Microsoft account, or a work or school account. Rhino Sync asks for access to the user's files and to files shared with them (Files.ReadWrite.All). If your tenant requires admin consent for apps, approve Rhino Sync in Microsoft Entra before users collaborate.

• Dropbox: a Dropbox account. The user must be signed in to the same Dropbox account in their browser when they pick the file.

Pre-configure user settings

Rhino Sync keeps per-user settings in settings.json. You can place this file before a user first starts Rhino.

Set UserName explicitly if account names contain dots or other symbols. Two people with the same user name can't collaborate at the same time.
